Thank you for helping us advocate for local, healthy food systems. The state has a 2015-17 budget finally and….
The VERY GOOD News:
- Senior and WIC Farmer Market Nutrition Programs were not cut at all and will continue at last year’s increased level. Yay!
- $5 million was funded for Healthy Kids – Healthy Schools grants which include grants for school kitchen equipment, school gardens & greenhouses, playground equipment and water bottle filling stations to encourage drinking water not soda.
- The Farming Education pilot that targets high schoolers at risk of dropping out is funded at $198,000 but unfortunately no additional money was allocated to expand this successful pilot statewide.
The DISAPPOINTING News: No additional $$ was allocated in the operating budget for WSDA Small Farms and Farm to School Programs, so they will continue with $125,000/year of general fund dollars plus any grants they can get.
